چکیده

Background—Gradual telomere erosion eventually limits the replicative life span of somatic cells and is regarded as an ultimate tumour suppressor mechanism, eliminating cells that have accumulated genetic alterations. Telomerase, which has been found in over 85% of human cancers, elongates telomeres and may be required for tumorigenesis by the process of immortalisation. Malignant mesothelioma is an incurable malignancy with a poor prognosis. The disease becomes symptomatic decades after exposure to carcinogenic asbestos fibres, suggesting the long term survival of pre-malignant cell clones. This study investigated the presence of telomerase in pleural malignant mesothelioma, which may be the target for future anti-telo-

The Role of Immunohistochemistry Studies in Distinguishing Malignant Mesothelioma from Metastatic Lung Carcinoma in Malignant Pleural Effusion

Background and Objective: Early diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is the key point of its treatment. The main problem is the precise diagnosis of mesothelioma and its differentiation from metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. Mesothelioma exhibits complex immunohistochemical characteristics. The aim of this study was to study hybrid immunohistochemistry in the differe...

Manganese superoxide dismutase in healthy human pleural mesothelium and in malignant pleural mesothelioma.

We hypothesized that manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), known to be induced in rat mesothelial cells by asbestos fibers, cytokines, and hyperoxia, may also be induced in asbestos-related pleural diseases such as mesothelioma. MnSOD was assessed in healthy human pleural mesothelium (n = 6), in biopsy samples of human pleural mesothelioma (n = 7), in transformed nonmalignant human mesothelia...

Downregulation of Sp1 is involved in honokiol-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in human malignant pleural mesothelioma cells.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely aggressive type of cancer and is associated with a poor patient prognosis due to its rapid progression. Novel therapeutic agents such as honokiol (HNK) improve the clinical outcomes of cancer therapy, yet the mechanisms involved have not been fully elucidated. The present study examined the regulatory effects of HNK on the growth and apoptosi...

Tissue factor pathway inhibitor expression by human pleural mesothelial and mesothelioma cells.

The mesothelial lining of the pleura and malignant mesothelioma promote fibrin deposition in pleural injury or neoplasia via expression of tissue factor (TF). It was hypothesized that these cells might also regulate intrapleural coagulation by elaborating TF pathway inhibitor (TFPI). TFPI activity and antigen in pleural fluids were assayed from patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), pneu...

The Influence of Iron Loading and Iron Chelation on the Proliferation and Telomerase Activity of Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

Background: Iron is an essential trace element in cell proliferation. Several investigations demonstrate that iron deprivation inhibits cell proliferation. However, the impact of iron on telomerase activity of activated lymphocytes remains unexplained to date. Objective: In this study, the effect of iron on the proliferation and telomerase activity of lymphocytes stimulated by phytohemagglutini...
